P4L, the customized demedication program by ADM
Antimicrobials are regularly used in animal nutrition for therapeutical reasons or still as growth promoters in some countries. The overuse of medication is leading to antimicrobials resistance (AMR) which directly impacts public health. The global trend to regulate the use of medication leads animal nutrition players to look into alternative solutions and products, for more resilient animal production and a sustainable future.
P4L (Partner For Life) concept
P4L is an holistic approach based on three pillars, addressing specific challenges for each animal species, aiming at limiting the use of medication. This program is fully customized in order to meet each animal species challenges, the markets’ expectations and needs and following each country’s feed and food regulations.
Nutrition strategy is ADM core business. Our technical teams have extensive knowledge of each species’ nutritional requirements and provide a high level of expertise on feed and diet formulation, raw materials, and finished goods analyses. In addition, specific digital tools and software for the formulation, rationing and analysis allow us to be always more efficient.
ADM provides services and recommendations with its farm management services. This pillar includes farm audits, specific animals management advice and procedures in order to improve farm management and get the best return on investment without or with less medication.
A specific approach by animal species
POULTRY
ADM offers a full program for broilers and layers to ensure food safety by limiting the contamination by pathogens, but also by participating in maintaining gut health through optimal nutrition and management. Gut microbiota plays a key role in the maintenance of intestinal health. In addition, many sanitary challenges in poultry production cause substantial economic losses to the industry each year due to increased mortality or impaired growth. The ADM coordinated approach allows to implement preventive measures to limit the use of antibiotics treatment.
SWINE
For swine species, ADM is addressing various challenges at each stage of a pig’s life, starting with the weaning period, by providing solutions to reduce or stop the use of antibiotics and zinc oxide. In some countries, the use of antibiotics as growth promoters (AGP), mainly in the fattening stage, is still allowed.
We are partnering with our customers who want to work on reducing this usage to ensure them optimal performances with a complete nutritional approach and more natural alternatives.
Finally, physiological disorders (anemia, lameness, oxidative stress and more) are primary constraints to swine production. This is why we are working on prevention with a multifactorial approach to limit the use of antibiotics.
RUMINANTS
For ruminant species, the P4L program brings solutions to answer various challenges. In the countries where AGP are still used, we are providing an holistic approach to support our customers in their reduction target. Respiratory diseases and mastitis remain key diseases on which we work on prevention in order to limit the use of medication.
Furthermore, many types of parasites (worms, coccidia etc.) can affect the animals and cause different diseases too. A prevention approach is also essential to reduce the use of chemical molecules with the objective of reducing induced resistance.
