Improve your performance with particle size measurement in pig and poultry farming
Particle size is an important factor in the valorization of feed for pigs and poultry. In pig production, it is a factor whose importance is underestimated compared to the volumes of dry raw materials ground in breeding (more than 1.2 million tons per year).
Today, in order to control particle size, the farmers have to call on the services of a laboratory analysis (which generates costs and delays) or use a rapid measurement tool that is not necessarily adapted to the desired species.

Given this situation, ADM experts have developed the SHAKE UP BOX, a complete particle size measurement service including:
- A box with 4 grids specifically adapted to the grain size objectives of each species, pig, and poultry. This box allows a dry ground raw material or a reconstituted feed to be sieved in order to control its particle size.
- A quick calculation and recommendation application to enhance the reading of refusals in each compartment and thus quickly diagnose grain size problems.
Why measure particle size?
The digestive system of pigs and poultry can valorize the feed correctly only if it is in sufficient contact with the particles that compose it. If the particles are too coarse, they will not be fully valorized and this is a direct economic loss. In addition, particles that are too fine have a negative impact on the health of the digestive tract and on the animal’s mobility and comfort.
The target particle size can be different depending on the age of the recipient animals (target particle size). To obtain the desired particle size, it is important that the feed factory equipment is of good quality, well adjusted, and maintained over time.
How does SHAKE UP BOX work?
# ANALYSIS BOX
The box is composed of 5 compartments, separated by 4 grids whose mesh diameter corresponds to a progressive coefficient which has been defined in order to correctly frame the average particle size required for the different physiological stages of each species. Between 600 and 800 μm for pigs and between 500 and 3150 μm for poultry. The box is easy to handle and its size allows a significant sample size to be tested with a volume of 280 ml, i.e. between 150 and 190 g depending on the density of the sample.
#DIGITAL APP
The application is available online and accessible to authorized persons. After entering the password, the nutrition advisor reports the reading of each compartment from 1 to 5 in the tool. The results are published automatically and visually: analysis of the main criteria calculated, suggestions for improvement, and publication of a summary sheet to share with the farmer.
